Getting Started with Your Estate Plan, Tax Season Edition

Lots of people ask how to get started with their estate planning. Here’s an easy way to do that:

As you get your tax return information ready, take a minute or two to set aside copies of papers that will be important to your family. Documents like 1099s and 1098s will help you and your family locate assets. Maybe you have an old IRA, or a mutual fund account that you sometimes forget.

And while you’re at it, please check your beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k), and life insurance. Update as necessary.
