Peter Shelton is a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law! This distinction is earned by a California licensed attorney who meets rigorous requirements: The attorney must have at least 45 hours of education in their specialty field during the three years prior to applying to the certification specialization program. The attorney must also pass a specialization exam in their field (almost like a second bar exam). Upon passing this exam, the State Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization must then approve each attorney’s application, after consulting with the attorney’s colleagues, opponents and local judges.
Upon approval, the attorney is certified as a specialist. The attorney must maintain this certification by completing 36 hours of education every three years along with their MCLE (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education) compliance. As of December 31, 2017, only 971 of over 190,000 active California attorneys were certified as specialists in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law.
